Resize and convert an image by editing its URL

Upload one original image and serve every size and format that your pages need from it. Storage resizes and converts the image from the width, height, and format in its URL, then caches each variant at the CDN edge.

Resize, crop, and convert images from the URL

Request an image at the width and height that your layout needs by adding parameters to its URL. Storage converts the format, adjusts the quality, scales for device pixel ratio, and crops the image at the CDN edge. It caches each result there with an ETag, so a browser can revalidate its copy with a conditional request.

What Storage can do to an image from its URL

Dynamic resizing

Request an image at any width and height up to the limits that you set on the container. Storage resizes it on the first request for that size and stores the result in the CDN cache for later requests.

Multiple fit modes

Choose cover, contain, inside, outside, or fill as the fit mode for each request. For a portrait, face detection can center the crop on the face.

Format conversion

Convert any stored image to AVIF, WebP, JPEG, or PNG, and give each format its own default quality to trade file size against detail.

DPR support

Storage scales an image by the device pixel ratio in the URL, so a 2x or 3x screen receives two or three times the pixels of the requested width.

Background customization

Choose the color that Storage fills in behind a transparent image or around padding, so that the background matches the design of your site.

Quality control

Set the compression quality on each request. Ask for heavy compression on a grid of thumbnails and for a higher quality setting on a hero image.

ETag-based caching

Storage caches each transformed image with an ETag at 200+ edge locations. A browser with a cached copy sends a conditional request and downloads the image again only when the ETag changes.

Automatic optimization

With automatic optimization on, Storage chooses the format and quality for each browser from the image formats that the browser's request accepts.

Build faster with solutions designed for real-world needs

Upload the original once and request thumbnails from its URL

Upload the full-size image to Storage. When a page needs a thumbnail, the page requests the image URL with width and height parameters.

Impact

Storage generates each thumbnail on the first request for its size and caches it at the CDN edge, so the upload completes as soon as Storage receives the original.

Serve sharp images to high-density screens with one parameter

Add a dpr parameter to the image URL, with dpr=2 for a 2x screen and dpr=3 for a 3x screen. Storage multiplies the requested width and height by that ratio.

Impact

Your page can build a srcset from one image URL with a different dpr value for each entry, so the only image file that you keep is the original.

Serve AVIF or WebP from a JPEG or PNG original

Add a format parameter to the image URL to request AVIF, WebP, JPEG, or PNG. Storage converts the image at the CDN edge and applies the quality that you set for that format.

Impact

Because Storage converts each image at request time, your build step uploads the original file and nothing else.

Fit an image to each layout with one parameter

Use cover for thumbnails, contain for product images, inside or outside for a box with fixed dimensions, and fill for an exact size. With face detection on, Storage places the subject of a portrait at the center of the crop.

Impact

Your page sets the crop for each layout with one fit parameter in the image URL, so your application needs no cropping code of its own.
